MADISON COUNTY

HISTORY

The formation of Madison County was approved on January 7, 1853, and organization became official on August 7, 1854. Named after James Madison, the nation's fourth president, Madison County is currently home to four communities and 13,661 residents.

These historical sites provide insight into the past of Madison County. 
SHAPIRA HOTEL

Constructed in 1904 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, this hotel is now called the Woodbine Inn and Restaurant. 
MOFFATSVILLE PLANTATION

This land and Raven Hill Plantation were settled by Sarah Goree, and her children, in 1853 after the death of her husband, Langston. 
SEVEN OAKS PLANTATION

This 7,100-acre tract was acquired in 1838 by Patrick Lawson Hayes and supported more than 400 people before it was sold in 1903.

MADISON COUNTY COURTHOUSE

Madison County has been home to six courthouses since 1854. All rich in historical significance, four of these structures were lost to fire with the present building being completed in 1970.
